7 Ways to Approach Generation Gap in Society

When the Generation Gap arises?

A generation gap arises when there is a difference of views between one generation and another regarding values, ideas, beliefs, thoughts, and actions. Opinions of a person change at every stage of life. When he is a kid he has different opinions when he is teenager opinions are different, they again differ when he is an adult and when he moves to old age, they are different. In this way, the generations get separated from one another. Each generation set its individual trends and artistic impression. These gaps are prevalent in society for a long ago. They occur because of the fast rate of change in society. As the development is happening at a rapid rate, the change in lifestyles can be seen clearly. They have different experiences with life so the difference in thoughts is inevitable.

Ways to Approach Generation Gap in Society

They have a difference of opinions in almost every impact. But this generation gap can be reduced:-

1. Family

This is the first place where this gap can be found easily. Older generations prefer living in a joint family whereas the new generation of people prefers their individual way of living. They don't want any kind of interference and want to lead a life full of freedom and avoid the traditional way of living. It is sad to see how relationships these days are demolished just because of the conflict of images. The young generation is very much curious and they can't keep control of anger for silly things. The constant peer pressure to prove themselves and excel everywhere, comparison with others is the reason for their such behavior. So this is the responsibility of elderly people to openly talk to them about any issues.

2. Language

Their language differs and forms a parallel gap that can be difficult to communicate across. This creates complications while conversations at home, in the workplace at school, college. With every passing decade, new generations come up and they set their new standards of communication. Language defines to which generations the person belongs.

3. Emerging Technology

The same change can be seen with emerging technologies. Technology has widened the gap more. People with an older generation find it difficult to use the new digital technology and coping it with. Somehow slowly they are learning. Even a kid of 1 or 2 years old is very familiar with digital gadgets without even being taught anything about it. They have created a very private area of networking and thus minimizing the conversation with their parents and grandparents at home. Spending a long time with gadgets while talking, messaging on social media. Certainly, they have changed their way of communication. They socialize less in real life and more virtually. They avoid attending marriages, social events but can spend long hours in group chats. Interacting, impressing, and making friends with people they have not even met in real life is no big thing. Though some elderly people resist changing and find it not so convenient to explore, so they avoid learning new things. But exposure to life challenging tasks can be turned out the best way to bridge this gap. Social networking is a good example. By learning this they can also keep a watch over their kid's activities.

4. At the workplace

The older generation believes that the young generation people can do not do a single task at their own and without the help of experienced people. They are believed to be a narcissist. They don't want to face challenges but want a quick promotion. This may be true but not with everyone. They poorly perform when they are freshers and don't have any working exposure. The highly experienced people should not criticize the younger ones, else they will have a negative mindset about older people. The older people are required to train the new generation to develop a high competency among them. Youths are very quick in learning new things at the workplace. They can quickly replace a higher experienced person. Each person can add different values. A team is always formed from people with different experiences and skills. This difference at the workplace can be avoided by making open communication and giving equal value to everyone of every age group.

5. Education

We cannot believe that the shortage of wisdom is a weakness. Each individual has different life adventures through which they gain different skillsets and understanding. They have not learned the new things which the present generations already know. Our parents and grandparents were not educated the way we are, but this doesn't imply they are useless. Our parents are our first teachers. If they can shape our life why can't we give them another chance by making them learn new things? Your attitude can reduce this hole.

6. Respect each other's views

One should not assume that they have a strong and valid opinion and their way of doing the work is best. It may be your culture of approaching the task in the way you carry out, but the other's way of doing things may be different. One's views can be different either they may be political, social, or religious. Everyone has their views and they are free to express them unless they hurt anyone's sentiments. While discussing things use terms, so they feel you are respecting their viewpoints. It is seen that the older generation seem to have put their thoughts on their contemporaries unnecessarily and are made to obey them against their wish. They think of themselves as the best decision-maker. There is a need to accept each other's views rather than just play the blame game and prioritizing over the other. You will earn respect and appreciation when you give it.

7. A Change in view towards women

In olden times women were confined to the home and household chores. But today women are evolving in a rather different way. They are multitasking. They can do the household chores and also at the same time can fulfill their dreams and desires. This has become possible because the perception of society has changed towards them. They can work according to their choice.
